Senior Club Instructor - Sensei Simon Budden

I’m Simon Budden - the Senior Instructor to the club, currently graded at 5th Dan. My martial arts experience dates back to 1968 when I started boxing with my grandfather Bill Clarke who was a boxing coach, before taking up Judo in 1970. I was a member of the BJA Junior Squad.

Since this time, although concentrating my studies on Goju Ryu and Shotokan Karate, I have also experienced several other martial arts including Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate, Tomiki and Yoshikan Aikido, Western Boxing, and Wing Chun Kung Fu. I’m a former international competitor, past Captain of the SEKU Team and have also been a member of the England All Styles Karate Squad. In addition I’ve worked with members of the Armed forces and for private security companies.

In 1983, I founded the Winchester Shotokan Karate Do ( Now HTKA), which after thirty years is now Winchester's oldest karate club.

In 1990, I decided that it was necessary to pursue my teaching career on a full time basis, as my commitments were growing. In addition to being the senior instructor at the Hampshire Traditional Karate Academy (HTKA), I teach at Winchester College, St Swithun’s Girls School and The Pilgrims’ School in Winchester, The Bedales School in Petersfield (now run by James Omand) the Army Training Regiment (ATR, now Army Technical foundation college)) in Winchester and at the University of Southampton.

Since 1989, I have been studying Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate under the banner of IOGKF with its Chief instructor Sensei Morio Higaonna 10th dan.

I’m also a licensed Trainer of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and Licenced Hypnotic (see www.stateofmindnlp.co.uk) and a qualified Shiatsu tutor. I also train in the English Longbow.
